Subtraction with Regrouping

Regrouping numbers helps you subtract eight from three in the problem below.

Sometimes you have to regroup before you can subtract three-digit numbers.  Look at the ones place value.  You cannot subtract 8 from 3 without regrouping.

Regroup the 3 into 13 ones and the 4 into 3 tens. Subtract.

		3	13
	7
	2	1	8
			5

Subtract the tens.

		3	13
	7
	2	1	8
		2	5

Subtract the hundreds.
