The capital city of the United States is Washington, D.C.  There are many things to see during a visit to the nation's capital.  Washington, D.C. is home to many monuments and memorials.  Below are three memorials or monuments in Washington, D.C. that honor past presidents of the U.S.

The Washington Monument was built to honor the first president of the United States, George Washington.  The Washington Monument is the tallest structure in Washington, D.C. The monument is about 555 feet tall.  There are 897 steps to the top of the Washington Monument, but visitors use the elevator which takes 70 seconds to reach the top.

The Lincoln Memorial was made to honor President Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States.  The Lincoln Memorial has 36 columns that represent, or stand for, the number of states in the Union during the time Lincoln was president.  The stone steps of the memorial lead to a 19-foot tall statue of Lincoln.  The Lincoln Memorial is 99 feet tall and is pictured on the back of a penny.

The Jefferson Memorial was built to honor Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the U.S.  Construction of the memorial began on December 15, 1938.  The top of the Jefferson Memorial is in a dome shape.  It also has 26 columns.  Inside the memorial is a 19-foot tall statue of Jefferson. Jefferson's writings are engraved in the interior walls of the memorial.
