George Washington was the first President of the United States.  He fought in the Revolutionary War to win independence from England.  Washington worked to unite the colonies to become the United States.  With his leadership, the colonies learned to work together.  He served as President for eight years before retiring to Mt. Vernon.  He is called "The Father of Our Country."
