6-21 Spelling Tip

When y sounds like i
When y follows an initial consonant, y sounds like i.   It can sound like a short i or a long i.
Y sounds like i in dynasty, hyena, and hydrant.

 

Words Definitions
1. pylon a tower for supporting a long span of of wire
2. hyrax any of several small mammals of Africa, Syria, Israel, Sinai, and Arabia that have a thickset body with short ears, legs, and tail and feet with soft pads and broad nails
3. gyrate spin, whirl
4. xylophone a musical instrument consisting of a series of wooden bars varying in length and sounded by striking with two wooden hammers
5. cyst a closed pouch or sac of fluid that develops in the body in some diseased conditions
6. tyrant a ruler who exercises total power harshly or cruelly
7. cycle a period of time taken up by a series of events or actions that repeat themselves regularly and in the same order
8. lyric the words of a song
9. mystery something that has not been or cannot be explained
10. bylaw a rule adopted by an organization for governing its members and regulating its affairs
