5-26 Spelling Tip

Homophones
Homophones are words that sound alike.  They have different meanings and spellings.
Hole, whole, fare, fair, night and knight are all examples of homophones.

 

Words Definitions
1. wait 1.  stop doing something or stay till something happens.   2.  the time of waiting:  I had to wait a long time for the plane.   3.  be ready; look forward.
2. weight how heavy a thing is:  The cat's weight is ten pounds.
3. pair 1.  a set of two; two things that go together:  a pair of shoes.  2.  a thing with two parts that can't be used separately: a pair of scissors.
4. pare 1.  cut, trim, or shave off the outer part of ; peel:   pare an apple.  2.  cut away little by little.
5. rain 1.  water falling in drips from the clouds.  2. fall in drops:  It rained all night.
6. reign 1.  period of power of a ruler.  2.  to rule: A king reigns over his kingdom.  3.  act of ruling; royal power; rule.   4.  exist everywhere; prevail:  On a still night silence reigns.
7. mane the long, heavy hair growing on the back of or around the neck or a horse, lion, etc.
8. main 1.  most important.  2.  a large pipe for water, gas, and so on:  There is a water main under the street.
9. metal 1.  a material such as iron, gold, or silver.  2.   made of metal:  a metal cover.
10. meddle busy oneself with or in other people's things or affairs without being asked or needed:  Don't meddle with my things.
