5-22 Spelling Tip

The s sound.
The s sound is spelled with an s in snake and sand.
The s sound is spelled with a c in cent and cereal.

1. cereal 1.  any grain that is used as food.  Wheat, rice, and corn are cereals.  2.  food made from the grain.  Oatmeal and corn meal are cereals.
2. sacrifice 1.  act of offering to a god.  2.  the thing offered.  3.  give or offer to a god.  4.  a giving up of one thing for another.  5.  give up.  6. loss from selling something below its value.  7.  sell at a loss.  8.  (in baseball) a bunt that helps a base runner to advance, or a fly that allows a base runner to score, although the batter is put out.

7. principal 1.  most important; chief; main:  The principal character in this story is a dog.  2.  the head of a school.
8. centipede a flat, wormlike animal with many pairs of legs, the front pair of which are claw like and contain poison glands.
9. cease come to an end; put an end to; stop:  The music ceased suddenly.
10. physical 1.  of the body.  2.  of matter; material: The tide is a physical force.  3.  according to the laws of nature: It is a physical impossibility for the sun to rise in the west.
