5-17 Spelling Tip

Double consonant words.
Many words have a double consonant in the middle.  The double consonant only makes one sound.
Words with a double consonant in the middle are common, pressure, and suddenly.

 

Words Definitions
1. communicate give and receive facts, news, and ideas.  There are many ways to communicate.
2. pressure 1.  the continued action of a weight or force:  The small box was flattened by the pressure of the heavy book on top of it.  2.  a state of trouble or strain:  working under pressure.  3.  a compelling force or influence:  I was under pressure from others to change my mind.
3. suddenly made or brought about in a short time.
4. bubbles round drops of water that are full of air.
5. opposite 1.  placed against; face to face; back to back:  The post office is opposite the fire station.  2.  as different as can be: East and west are opposite directions.
6. accompany 1.  go along with:  May we accompany you on your walk?  2.  be or happen in connection with:  The rain was accompanied by high wind.  3.  play a musical accompaniment for:  He accompanied the singer on the piano.
7. swallow 1.  take into your stomach through your mouth.  2. a small bird that can fly very fast.
8. patter make rapid taps:  The rain pattered on our car as we rode.
9. occasion 1.  a particular time:  We have met them on several occasions.  2.  a special event:  The ring was worn on a special occasion.   3.  a good chance; opportunity:  The trip gave us an occasion to get better acquainted.
10. necessary 1.  needed; having to be done:  a necessary repair.   2. unavoidable:  Death is a necessary end.  3.  thing impossible to do without:  Food, clothing, and shelter are necessary for living.
