5-15 Spelling Tip
The Schwa_L.gif (873 bytes) sound
The Schwa_L.gif (873 bytes) sound is a vowel sound different than the vowel sounds a, e, i, o, and u.
The Schwa_L.gif (873 bytes) sound can be made with any of the vowels and the letter l.
The Schwa_L.gif (873 bytes) sound is in battle, simple, level, hospital, and puddle.

 

Words Definitions
1. April the fourth month of the year.  It has 30 days.
2. fable a story that teaches a lesson.  Many fables are about animals that talk.
3. level 1.  having the same height everywhere; flat; even: a level floor.  2.  something that is level; level or flat surface, tract of land, etc.  3.  an instrument for showing whether a surface is level.
4. hospital a place where sick people are cared for.
5. puddle 1.  a small pool of water:  a puddle of rain.   2. a small pool of any liquid:  a puddle of milk.
6. civil 1.  of a citizen or citizens: civil duties.  2. of the government, state, or nation:  Police departments are civil institutions to protect local citizens.
7. federal formed by an agreement between states establishing a central government to handle their common affairs while the states keep separate control of local affairs:  Switzerland the the United States both became nations by federal law.
8. chapel 1.  a building for worship, not as large as a church.  2.  a small place for worship in a larger building:  a hospital chapel.
9. simple 1.  easy to do or understand:  She learned to play a simple song on the piano.  2.  not fancy; without anything extra:  a simple lunch.
10. middle 1.  halfway between; in the center: The middle house is ours.  2.  the place halfway between: the middle street.
