4-8 Spelling Tip

The q sound.
The q sound is sometimes spelled with a qu.
The q sound is spelled qu in squirt, squeeze, and square.

 

Words Definitions
1. squirt a sudden rapid stream from a small opening.  The orange squirted me in the eye.
2. squeeze 1. push hard against.  You push an orange hard against a surface to squeeze out its juice.  2.  a steady pressure:  She gave my hand a squeeze.  3. hug:  She squeezed her pet.  4.  force by a steady pressure: I can't squeeze these books into a drawer.  5.  force a path:  Can you squeeze through the crowd?
3. square 1.  a figure with four equal sides and four equal corners.  2.  anything having this shape.  The town square has a courthouse. 3.  having this shape:  I need a square piece of paper.
4. squash 1.  squeeze flat:  Don't squash the bug.  2. a vegetable that grows on a vine.
5. squeak 1. make a short, sharp, shrill sound:  This chair squeaks when you sit on it.  2. the sound of squeaking:  There was a faint squeak in the corner.
6. squish 1.  squash something:  I squished the mud with my toes.  2. the sound of something being squashed:  The stepped into the puddle with a squish.
7. squint 1.  look with eyes partly closed:  I squinted at the bright sun.  2.  a look with the eyes partly closed:  he looked at me with a squint.
8. squirrel a small, bush-tailed rodent that usually lives in trees.
9. squat to crouch or sit close to the ground.  The boys squatted while they played the game of tag.
10. quickly fast; in a quick way:  The girls quickly arranged the party.
