4-22 Spelling Tip

Silent letters.
Some words begin with letters we do not hear.  These are called silent letters.  Words with silent letters are knot, wrist, and knife.

 

Words Definitions
1. knot 1.  strings or ropes twisted together so they will not pull apart:  He tied the ends of the rope in a knot.  2. tie or fasten in a knot:  Knot the string; it won't slip.
2. knees the joints between the thigh and the lower leg.
3. knight a man given a title because of great service.  In stories, knights often fight dragons.
4. knuckle the joints in the fingers of the hand:  I scraped my knuckles on the sidewalk.
5. knives more than one knife.
6. knit 1. make a kind of cloth out of yarn, using long needles: Will you knit a sweater for me?  2. grown together:  The broken bone has knitted quickly.
7. knapsack a bag, usually made of canvas or nylon that is strapped on the back and used for carrying things.
8. wrapper that which something is wrapped in:  The boy took the wrapper off the ice cream before eating it.
9. wrench a tool to hold and turn nuts.
10. wreck to damage or ruin by breaking up.
