A Pioneer Family
Mama and Papa decided we
would travel west. We packed everything we owned into our
wagon and set out to find a new home.
There were six of us: Papa
and Mama, me, Seth, Hannah, Billy, and our little sister Rebecca.
We were sad to leave.
Mama was leaving behind her mother and father and her two
brothers. We were leaving behind the only friends we
had. But Papa said we would find new friends in a new town.
We traveled for many
weeks. Mama cooked our meals over a campfire. We slept
together on the wagon under the stars every night.
When it rained everything in
our wagon got wet. We had many things in the wagon like
blankets and pillows, trunks full of clothes, barrels full of
food, dishes, our few toys, Papa's tools, and a Bible.
Papa said the land we are
looking for isn't too far away. When we see the next river
and cross it, the land on the other side is what we've been
looking for.
I can't wait. I
imagine a new log home with a warm fire in the fireplace.
Mama will be baking a cake. The smell of it will fill the
whole house. Papa will read us a story and tuck us into bed.
It won't be long now because
I see a river up ahead.
