Lesson List

Addition and subtraction are opposite operations.  You can write related facts using addition and subtraction.

6 + 4 = 10 and 10 - 4 = 6 are two ways to write the same problem.

You can use addition and subtraction as opposite operations to solve any equation.  To solve the equation below, think of it as a subtraction problem.

a + 23 = 47

Rewrite it as a subtraction problem.

47 - 23 = a

a + 23 = 47

a  = 47 - 23

a = 24

You can check the solution by putting 24 in the place of the variable,

24 + 23 = 47

Rewrite each of the following equations using the opposite operation.

x + 16 = 48

- = x

40 + a = 42

= a

25 + y = 50

- = y
