Abigail buys a candy bar for 55¢.  She gives the clerk $1.00.  The clerk gives Abigail change by counting forward.  55¢, for the candy bar, one dime 65¢, one dime 75¢, and one quarter is $1.00.  The clerk gives Abigail two dimes and a quarter for a total of 45¢.  100 cents minus 55 cents equals 45 cents.
