Lesson List

You can add and subtract thousands the same way you add and subtract ones.

Look at the examples below.

5,000 + 3,000 = 8,000 Spacer.gif (42 bytes) 5,000 - 3,000 = 2,000
          Spacer.gif (42 bytes)
5 + 3 = 8   5 - 3 = 2

Notice when you add 5,000 and 3,000 the answer is 8,000.  When you add 5 and 3 the answer is 8.  The difference is the thousands.

You can subtract and add thousands mentally by just adding or subtracting the first numbers.

Solve the problems below.

Remember the comma as in 1,000.

6,000 + 3,000 =
6 + 3 =
6,000 - 3,000 =
6 - 3 =
9,000 + 3,000 =
9 + 3 =
9,000 - 3,000 =
3 - 3 =
12,000 + 5,000 =
12 + 5 =
12,000 - 5,000 =
12 - 5 =
15,000 + 5,000 =
15 + 5 =
15,000 - 5,000 =
15 - 5 =
35,000 + 25,000 =
35 + 25 =
35,000 - 25,000 =
35 - 25 =
80,000 + 4,000 =
80 + 4 =
80,000 - 4,000 =
80 - 4 =
29,000 + 23,000 =
29 + 23 =
29,000 - 23,000 =
29 - 23 =
