There are two kinds of division problems.

Example 1:  How many groups?

Susan wants to buy 24 apples.  She wants to put 4 apples into each bowl.  How many bowls does she need?

You need to figure out how many groups of 4 there are in 24?

24 -:- 4 = 6

Susan needs 6 bowls for all of the apples.

 

Example 2:  How many in each group?

Mr. Day has 36 bolts.  He wants to divide them equally into 6 small boxes.   How many bolts should he put into each box?  You want to know how many will be in each group if he divides 36 into 6 groups?

36 -:- 6 = 6

Mr. Day should put 6 bolts into each box.

 

Solve the following division word problems.
Put the correct quotient in each box.

 

Mike has 35 video tokens.  He wants to use them equally in 5 different games.  How many video games can he play?

video games.

 

Felicia picked 64 flowers from her grandmother's garden.  She wants to divide them equally into 8 vases.  How many flowers will she need in each vase?

flowers.

 

Cassie bought 81 beads at the craft store.  She wants to make the same bracelet for each of her 9 friends.  How many beads can she put on each bracelet?

beads.

 

Tony has 24 stickers in his sticker collection.  He wants to put them into a book with 6 stickers on each page.  How many pages will he need?

pages.

 

Allison and Andy are having a birthday party.  They are planning on buying a treat for each of their 28 guests.  The treats are packaged in bags of 4.  How many bags of treats will they have to buy?

bags of treats.

 

Mrs. Moon has invited all 72 of her piano students to participate in a recital.   They will be seated in 8 rows.  How many chairs will she need to set up in each of the 8 rows?

chairs.
