2-91-1 Fractions - Lowest Terms

A fraction is part of something.

You have already learned wpe29.gif (913 bytes), Frac.1_3.gif (914 bytes), Frac.1_4.gif (916 bytes), and Frac.1_5.gif (914 bytes).

 

wpe29.gif (913 bytes) (one half is red)

 

Frac.1_3.gif (914 bytes) (one third is blue)

 

Frac.1_4.gif (916 bytes) (one fourth is green)

 

Frac.1_5.gif (914 bytes) (one fifth is purple)

 

Fractions may be written like this Frac.1_5.gif (914 bytes) , or like this 1/5.

Fractions can also be written in lowest terms, or simplified.  Look at the example below.

 

Four equal parts.

Two are green.

The fraction is 2/4 or 1/2

   
2/4 in lowest terms is 1/2

 

Ten equal parts.

Five are red.

The fraction is 5/10 or 1/2

   
5/10 in lowest terms is 1/2

 

Look at the fractions below.  Simplify and put each fraction in lowest terms.

 

Four equal parts.

Two are green.

The fraction is 2/4 or

 

 

 

 

Six equal parts.

Two are ruby.

The fraction is 2/6 or

 

 

 

 

Ten equal parts.

Two are yellow.

The fraction is 2/10 or

 

 

 

 

Six equal parts.

Four are ruby.

The fraction is 4/6 or

 

 

 

 

Eight equal parts.

Two are orange.

The fraction is 2/8 or

 

 

 

 

Ten equal parts.

Four are yellow.

The fraction is 4/10 or

 

 

 

 

Twelve equal parts.

Four are purple.

The fraction is 4/12 or

 

 

 

 

Eight equal parts.

Four are orange.

The fraction is 4/8 or

 

 

 

 

Twelve equal parts.

Six are purple.

The fraction is 6/12 or

 

 

 

 

Ten equal parts.

Six are yellow.

The fraction is 6/10 or

 

 

 

 

Twelve equal parts.

Two are purple.

The fraction is 2/12 or

 

 

 

 

Eight equal parts.

Six are orange.

The fraction is 6/8 or

 

 

 

 

Ten equal parts.

Eight are yellow.

The fraction is 8/10 or

 

 

 

 

Twelve equal parts.

Eight are purple.

The fraction is 8/12 or
