The fold line formed is called a line of symmetry.   It is called this because each side is equal or congruent.

When a shape can be divided into two equal parts it is symmetrical.

Circle.gif (1269 bytes)

This circle is symmetrical.

It can be divided in half equally.

It has a line of symmetry.

Square.gif (1127 bytes)

This square is symmetrical.

It can be divided in half equally.

It has a line of symmetry.

Look at the objects below.  Are they symmetrical?  Do they have a line of symmetry?  Yes or No.
