You can write the numbers 1-20 in another way.  This way was developed by the Romans many years ago. 

 

ROMAN NUMERALS
Symbol What it means
I one
V five
X ten

 

The Romans did not use place value.

II means two.

III means three.

XX means twenty.

 

A symbol before another symbol means one less.

IV means four.

IX means nine.

 

A symbol after another symbol means one more.

VI means six.

XI means eleven.
