When you subtract, you may need to regroup.  You can change 23 pencils to 1 group of TEN and 13 ONES.

33 can be written as:

3 TENS and 3 ONES or 2 TENS and 13 ONES.

 

Regroup the following numbers.

21 can be written as:

2 TENS and 1 ONE or 1 TEN and ONES.

 

44 can be written as:

4 TENS and 4 ONES or 3 TENS and ONES.

 

55 can be written as:

TENS and 5 ONES or 4 TENS and ONES.

 

79 can be written as:

7 TENS and ONES or TENS and 19 ONES.

 

37 can be written as:

3 TENS and ONES or TENS and 17 ONES.

 

68 can be written as:

6 TENS and 8 ONES or TENS and 18 ONES.

 

83 can be written as:

TENS and 3 ONES or 7 TENS and ONES.

 

72 can be written as:

TENS and 2 ONES or TENS and 12 ONES.

 

91 can be written as:

9 TENS and 1 ONE or 8 TENS and ONES.

 

64 can be written as:

6 TENS and ONES or 5 TENS and ONES.
