Look at the example.

Look at the digits in the ONES place first.  5 and 1

Subtract. 5 - 1 = 4

 

Now look at the digits in the TENS place.  6 and 4.

Subtract.  6 - 4 = 2

The answer is 24.

 

Look at the example.  The digits in the ONES place are 7 and 4.

There is only one digit in the TENS place. 2

Bring the 2 down because 2 - 0 = 2.

The answer is 23.
